This humor may need some explaining.

Republic: A form of government where the governed have a fundamental set of inalienable rights.
Democracy: A form of government where any right an individual has can be voted away by a majority.

The United States of America was originally founded as a republic, and this is how the founding fathers described it. They had a dim view of "Democracies." This is why the Pledge of Allegiance is a pledge to a republic.

The author of this joke shares the concern of many that the United States of America is in the process of becoming, or has already become, a democracy. More Information
