Republic: A form of government where the governed have a fundamental
set of inalienable rights.
Democracy: A form of government where any right an individual has can be voted
away by a majority.
The United States of America was originally founded as a republic, and this is how the founding fathers described it. They had a dim view of "Democracies." This is why the Pledge of Allegiance is a pledge to a republic.
