VERMONT JAILERS RALLY IN MONTPELIER

Cindy Myrick

MONTPELIER -- On Wednesday, May 22nd, 2002, a group of Vermont JAILers, along with several others interested in judicial accountability, congregated at the People's Statehouse at 8 a.m., donned navy blue J.A.I.L. T-shirts, and sat at a round table in the cafeteria.  We got noticed, and we were delighted to share information about J.A.I.L. legislation with interested onlookers.

At 11 o'clock we made our way to Washington County Courthouse and met up with a few JAILers already there with signs, ready to rally.  After an hour or so, we moved up the street and positioned ourselves in front of the Vermont Supreme Court. The Statehouse was enjoying its annual barbecue on the Statehouse lawn and steps, and some of those folks joined in.

Dick Day's idea of a visual aid to catch attention, and which people would remember, was created by Marilynn Christian with the help of Tom Millington.  It was a figure of a judge in a black robe positioned inside a jail cell, holding the bars, wanting to get out I suspect.  Perfect!

The rally ended shortly before 5 p.m., and we met at the Vermont Center for Independent Living, where we planned our next J.A.I.L. event: a walk in Burlington on June 22nd, followed by a picnic in Richmond.
